VMware NSX 6.x – Part 9 – Create Distributed Logical Router

In our previous post we discussed about NSX Logical Switches and tested the Switching. So in this post, let us discuss about Routing. In the traditional hypervisor model, VMs in different subnet has to goto physical router and come back to the server. But by using the Logical Router, the routing decisions are handled by the Logical Router and the traffic is handled at the hypervisor level.

I have created two logical switches and a VM in each Logical Switch to test Routing.

TESTVM06 - 192.168.100.126
TESTVM07 - 192.168.200.120

To create a NSX Logical Router, login to WebClient -> Networking & Security -> NSX Edges -> Click +

Select Logical (Distributed) Router and provide the name, hostname and the tenant name.

Select Deploy Edge Gateway and click Next.

Give an Administrative Username and Password for the appliance. Enable SSH Access if required.

Click On + icon to add the appliance.

Enter the Resource Details and click OK.

Click Next.

We need to specify the Management and Logical interface. Management interface is to control the VM via SSH and Logical interface is for the Routing interfaces.

Click the + icon.

Enter the Interface name, Logical Switch and Primary IP Address.

Interface would be added.

Enter the details for the second interface.

Once both the interfaces are connected, click Next.

Configuring Gateway is optional. If needed, you can configure else click Next.

Click Finish.

An NSX Logical Router is successfully created.

You can check the routing functionality using a simple Ping between the VMs.
