VMware NSX 6.x – Part 5 – Host Preparation

After the NSX controllers are deployed, now NSX needs to install some VIBs on the host which would allow the host to enable VXLAN, distributed router and distributed firewall. Hence there are three VIBs which are getting installed on the host. The VIB installation is done on the Cluster level. Hence the VIBs would install it on all the hosts on the cluster.

The hosts need not to be in the maintenance mode during the installation. Virtual Machines can be running on the host and it doesn’t get impacted.

Goto Installation -> Host Preparation -> Cluster -> Install.

Click Yes.

Wait for the installation to complete. You can see the installation in the Tasks window.

Once the installation is done, the status should show as green.

Verify VIBs installation

To check if the VIBs are properly installed, click on Host -> Manage -> Networking -> TCP/IP Configuration. You would see VXLAN under custom stacks.

Open SSH session to the host and run the below command to verify the User World agents.

/etc/init.d/netcpad status

Check the VIB status

esxcli software vib get –vibname esx-vxlan

esxcli software vib get –vibname esx-vsip

If you get these output, which means that the VIBs installation was successful.
