VMware SRM 6.x – Part 2 – Installation

VMware Site Recovery Manager Server can be installed on the vCenter machine itself or on a dedicated Windows Server. In this lab, I have an dedicated server for the installation of VMware Site Recovery Manager Server.

Site A

I have downloaded the SRM Installation file into my newly deployed Windows Server 2012 R2.

Open the EXE file and select the language and click OK.

Installation will start.

In the Welcome wizard, click Next.

Click Next.

Select I agree to the terms in the license agreement and click Next.

Click Next.

Select the installation folder and click Next.

Specify the IP/FQDN of the Platform Services Controller and the SSO username and password.

Note: It is always recommended to use the FQDN

Click Accept if it prompts for the certificate validation.

Select the vCenter Server in the drop-down list and click Next.

Enter the Name for the site and an administrator E-mail address.

If the SRM server has two IP addresses, select the address for the administration from the drop down list.

Specify a plug-in ID to identify the instance of Site Recovery Manager.

Default Site Recover Manager Plug-in identifier: If you are planning to use one protected site to one recovery site.

Custom Site Recover Manager Plug-in identifier: If you plan to have a shared recovery site between multiple protected sites.

In our lab, I am going to use the default standard configuration.

You can use a custom certificate or proceed with the default certificate.

Provide the Name and OU for the certificate generation.

VMware SRM server needs a Database. Either you can use the embedded database or you can use an external database like Microsoft SQL Server.

Provide password for the Database.

Provide the service account details.

Click Install to start the installation.

Please be patient as the installation takes quiet a longer time.

Once the installation is done, click Finish.

Site B

Repeat the same steps on the SRM server on the recovery site.

Provide the FQDN of the recovery PSC Server.

Select the recovery vCenter Server.

Type in the details of the recovery SRM Server.

SRM installation is done. The next step would be to configure the SRM Recovery.
